Meet The Team

Gareth Thomas

I am an Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine trainee based in the North West of England, UK. I graduated from Keele University in 2012. Having spent my Foundation Years in Wales, I then moved to Birmingham to spend a year spread across Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine. Following this, I moved to North Wales to settle down with my wife and step-daughter. My training is across the Mersey Deanery in the North West of the UK. Medically speaking, I have always enjoyed the challenge that comes with an unwell patient regardless of aetiology.

I am an avid user of FOAM and firmly believe it is something that needs broadening to as many user groups as possible. Given that our target audience are those at the very beginning of their medical careers, these are also the future users of FOAM and should be engaged from as early as possible. I started FOAMdation with the support of the Countess of Chester’s Medical Education department.

Outside of Medicine I spend as much time as possible outside with my family and exercise my cravings for rugby and being on the top of a hill or hanging from a wall/piece of rock.

I am a Diabetes and Endocrinology (with General Internal Medicine) specialist registrar based in North West England, currently working at The Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

I have previously completed the Foundation Programme at Aintree University Hospital and The Walton Centre in 2014, and Core Medical Training at Aintree and The Countess of Chester Hospital in 2016 before working at the Countess as a Junior Clinical Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine for a year . I completed my Primary Medical Degree at The University of Sheffield in 2012, having completed an intercalated BMedSci in 2011, when I undertook a clinical research project in diabetes and cardiology.

I enjoy being involved regularly with the Foamdation podcast project as I like teaching, and feel this is a very useful educational resource. It is very satisfying to regularly contribute to the project, as well as receive any feedback from the listeners.

Outside of medicine, the main hobbies I enjoy are running, and skiing. I am a keen runner, being a member of Penny Lane Striders running club in Liverpool, and completing the New York Marathon in 2016, where I raised funds for the charity Sightsavers. In October 2017 I’ll be running the Chicago marathon where I will aim to better my time!

I am a current FY2 doctor working in the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. I recently gained my primary medical degree from the University of Liverpool in 2017 and have also gained a BSc (Hons) from Leeds university in Sports and exercise science in relation to medicine in 2016. I am looking to pursue a career in anaesthetics/emergency medicine and enjoy the challenge and versatility of managing acutely unwell patients. I have a passion for teaching and have frequently used free online medical resources (i.e. FOAMdation) and podcasts for personal learning and as teaching platform for others. I also have an passionate interest for sports medicine. Having recently completed my intercalated degree in Leeds I am currently gaining experience with local sports teams with an aim to complete a sports medicine diploma or masters in the future.

Aside from life as a junior doctor, I love to use my spare time exercising and playing lots of sports!! I play squash regularly for a local club and enjoy hiking and cycling in Wales. Please feel free to email direct for any queries/advice for working life as a junior doctor.
